Some winter tips for the garden
Are you wondering what you should be doing in your garden to keep it healthy and prepare for the spring? Need some ideas? Itching to eat some organic, home grown veggies and avoid the pesticides and other chemicals in much of our shop sold veggies? Not to mention the cost of organic produce!
Our team at MGS recommend broad beans, peas, cabbage, spinach and turnips as all are frost resistant. Other ideas for winter planting are asparagus, beetroot, broccoli, cauliflower, leek, parsnip, red onion, rhubarb, shallots and lettuce.
Perhaps now is the time to create a wonderful herb and veggie garden from one of our apple crates? Coriander grows brilliantly at this time of year – planted along with some of the above your little veggie masterpiece will make a wonderful feature in your garden.
Have you thought about picking up some bare root trees? These include roses, ornamentals and fruit trees that have been harvested during their dormant winter period and come “bare” – no potting mix or pot – so nice and cost effective!
Come and grab yourself some of our super-rich blended soil to give your soil some extra body – or even our composts to enrich your soil. Our pine bark looks fabulous and will help retain moisture and protect the soil from the weather.
Talking of moisture, have you checked your watering system lately? Make sure it’s not flooding your plants during the wet winter months – this could lead to root rot if the plants get cold and wet. Plant roots need oxygen and drowning them won’t help!
Come in and see us – we have plenty of great ideas and amazing new products – you can even pick up a trowel that doubles up as a beer opener! Happy gardening!
